Friends of the American Lation Museum Launches 5th Annual Design Contest

WASHINGTON, DC - The Friends of the American Latino Museum (FRIENDS), a 501(c)3 exclusively committed to advancing the creation of a national Smithsonian American Latino Museum in our nation’s capital, has launched it's 5th Annual Design Contest. The competition, presented through the generous support of Target, invites the organization's thousands of supporters to submit artwork that will be featured in its 2016 advocacy campaign. The winning design will be the centerpiece of our digital campaign and posters will also be created for distribution nationwide. In addition, the winner will receive a $500 Target gift card.

This year's theme is "To Illuminate the American Story for All"--the title of the feasibility report submitted to the president by the National Museum of the American Latino Commission five years ago on May 5, 2011. Entry information and more details about the contest can be found here.

"When we first held the campaign design contest, we had no idea it would become such an exciting annual tradition for the Friends of the American Latino Museum. The quality of the entries we receive, which has grown year by year, is a testament to the extraordinary talent of our community and our supporters. And it is a reminder of the great need to showcase the heritage and contributions of Latinos to American society in a Smithsonian museum on our National Mall," said Estuardo Rodriguez, executive director of FRIENDS.

Last year's contest was won by Francisco Romero (design below left) and due to the outstanding quality of the submissions, the FRIENDS also awarded an honorable mention to Steve Alfaro (design bottom right). Alfaro has adapted his piece to be featured in social media and promotional materials for this year's contest.

Artists who are interested in participating can submit their entries here until March 31. The winner will be announced on May 5, 2016, following a public vote by FRIENDS' supporters.
