Friends of the American Latino Museum Joins Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery to Honor Dolores Huerta
July 1st event to feature remarks from the civil rights icon who is the first Latina and only second living person to be featured in the One life series
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Friends of the American Latino Museum (FRIENDS), the only organization dedicated to creating a national museum of American Latino history and culture on our National Mall, is sponsoring the National Portrait Gallery’s latest exhibit, One Life: Dolores Huerta, honoring one of the Latino community’s most influential and iconic leaders. In honor of Dolores Huerta and the exhibit opening on July 3, 2015, FRIENDS will host a reception on Wednesday July 1st.
The legendary leader, Ms. Huerta, will be on hand at the reception as the museum prepares to open a year-long exhibit about her role in the California farm workers movement of the 1960s and 70s. The exhibit will be the second in the “One Life” series that features a living subject and the first to feature a Latina. The exhibit will coincide with the 50th Anniversary of the 1965 grape strike, which was supported by Huerta and the farm workers movement.
“Dolores Huerta and the courageous farm workers she helped lead epitomize the great Latino figures that so often get overlooked in our museums and history books,” said Estuardo Rodriguez, executive director of FRIENDS. “We are honored to be able to support the National Portrait Gallery and applaud its leadership for highlighting such a compelling figure in our nation’s history.”
Instagram is working with FRIENDS to highlight the event through the hashtags #VivaHuerta and, for those in attendance, an InstaMeet during the celebration. We have also invited Instagram advocates in DC for a special preview of the exhibit at an #empty the morning of the event. The #empty is an invitation-only opportunity for full access to the National Portrait Gallery and the American Art Museum; check out their exclusive images posted on #emptyartandportraits the morning of July 1st.
We are grateful to our 2015 presenting sponsor Target for their support of this reception and our campaign activities this year.
